AUBURN — A tree named Big Bertha dominates the living room: 1,000 colored lights, 400 blown-glass ornaments.

In an upstairs bedroom, it’s snowmen. Snowmen pillows, a rug, quilt, wall hangings, another tree and a snowman nativity. In another bedroom, a Twelve Days of Christmas theme: a plush teddy bear tree, a loon and moose tree, drinking glasses, snow globes, two more nativities.

Bruce Geoffroy starts unpacking, hanging and arranging on Thanksgiving night to get everything just so.

“It’s a hobby,” he said. “My wife does beading; I do Christmas.”

Every year he decorates more than a dozen trees, each with a theme: Snoopy, family photos, all brass. In the sewing room, where Butterscotch the guinea pig lives, a tiny tree’s decorated with buttons and spools of thread.

Geoffroy sets up a half-dozen nativity scenes throughout the house. Erects a Christmas village atop the refrigerator. Sprinkles a dusting of fake snow on the edge of the carpeted stairs. Decks the dining room in poinsettias.

He doesn’t leave a corner untouched.

“The house, originally elves resided here,” Geoffroy said, opening the door to a short hallway with 5-foot ceilings on the second floor. At the end of the hallway, off to the left, a tiny doorway, no taller than two feet, that opens to a crawl space he’s decorated with lights and another nativity.

“People ask, ‘How do I fit in that little hole?’ Not easy,” Geoffroy said.

He finds decorations at shops and yard sales. He and wife Louise swap an ornament every year. And every year, they all go up just a little bit different. He remembers as a young boy loving the holiday and decorating his own room.

“It takes me until Valentine’s Day to take it down, usually,” he said.
