The Lewiston Water Board has a man out making a house-to-house inspection, Michael Daicy, an employee having been appointed to that work. No inspection of the kind has been made before for 10 years and the work is expected to do much good towardsstopping a waste of water and also in discovering whether all the users of water are paying what they should.
50 years ago, 1959
Closing of Field Avenue from Williams Street to Woodlawn Avenue for sliding was referred last night by the Auburn City Council to Police Chief Alton E. Savage for a recommendation.
A petition, bearing approximately 25 signatures, was before the council. It asked for closing of the street to permit sliding and asked that sanding of the hill, when necessary, be limited to one-half the width of the street. The street has been closed for sliding in prior years.

AUGUSTA — On Jan. 1, the legal minimum hourly wage in the state of Maine will increase from $3.35 to $3.45 per hour.
The Maine Department of Labor reminds employers of the effective date of this increase in order that they may adjust their payrolls in accordance with the law enacted earlier this year.
Employers who do not comply with the law may be subject to a fine of not less than $50 nor more than $200.
