PERU — Selectmen are looking for three or four residents to serve on a new committee charged with helping to determine the future of the former Peru Elementary School.

Laurieann Milligan, vice chairman of the board, said selectmen decided Monday night to advertise for volunteers.

“We want to look into all the options,” Milligan said.

The nearly 60-year-old school closed when Dirigo Elementary School opened a couple of years ago. The addition, which is a standalone brick building at the rear of the school, is now the town office.

The two-story former school building gets sporadic community use, such as serving as a site for benefit suppers or as a place for the recreation department to hold Halloween events.

Voters decided to keep the building during the November election.

In addition to several residents, other members of the ad hoc Advisory Committee will come from the recreation department, Planning Board and selectmen.

Milligan said the new committee will likely hold its initial meeting during late January or early February. Among the duties of the committee will be to brainstorm ideas for the building’s use, research these ideas and develop guidelines.

Anyone interested in applying to serve on the committee should contact the town office at 562-4627.

Recommendations will then be forwarded to selectmen for a final determination.

The town also owns the former Rockemeka Grange Hall and former town office, both on the Peru Center Road. The former town office is currently on the market, while the future of the former Grange is still undecided.
