Central Maine Medical Center’s Wellness Solutions will offer the following programs beginning Jan. 4:
Ballroom Dancing: The six-week series, led by Diane Williams, is an advanced beginner class that will add more steps to participants’ dance repertoire in the foxtrot, waltz and swing. The class is intended for those who are comfortable with the basic steps of these three dances. A dance partner is required. The class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fridays.
Bellydancing: Imari, aka Lisa Cummings, will lead the six-week series presenting bellydancing as a therapeutic and energetic cardiovascular exercise suitable for all ages and body types. The class will be held from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Wednesdays.
Cardio Funk: The ongoing class features a combination of cardiovascular exercise mixed with some of today’s latest dance moves. Instructor is Glenn Atkins. The class meets from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays, from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturdays.
Cardio Sculpt and Sweat: The ongoing series, lead by Ian Barclay, combines low-impact moves with weight training, targeting major muscle groups while addressing hard to reach spots. The routine includes extensive floor work. The class is held from 5 to 6 p.m.
Tuesdays.
Fit-n-Fun: The exercise class is designed for the over-55 crowd and focuses on helping participants improve aerobic capacity, strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. The instructor for the series is Marcy Covey. The class will meet from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Flexible Body, Flexible Life: Bette Swett-Thibeault will lead the six-week series designed as a moderate, safe approach to improve fitness using varying exercise modes. The class will incorporate stretching, moderate aerobics, weights, circuit training and relaxation exercises. Participants should wear loose clothing and exercise shoes and bring a mat if they have one. The class will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays.
Functional Fitness: Participants will learn to increase both core and upper body strength and improve the stability of abdominal and low back muscles. Participants will discover how to prevent injury due to improper body mechanics and repetitive motion. The class will meet from noon to 12:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Happy Hearts: The class is designed for people with a cardiac event history including angioplasty, stents, heart attack, cardiac arrest, valve surgery, coronary artery bypass, stable angina and transplants who have completed a cardiac rehabilitation program and are looking for a maintenance program.
The class will include general supervision and individual, independent cardiovascular and strength training. It will also incorporate group weight training and self-safety skills. The instructor is Sue Driscoll. The class will meet at 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Hi-Lo Step Aerobics: Tina Sirois will lead the cardiovascular conditioning class, which will include both on- and off-the-step work, followed by abdominal work and stretching. The class will be held from 5:30 to 6:15 a.m. Tuesdays.
Personal Fitness: The class will begin with a one-on-one evaluation and program development session with a personal health counselor, then progress to a structured group exercise plan. The class will meet at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m.
and 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Pilates: The series, led by Tina Sirois, will cover core strengthening and stretching exercises with light weights, therabands and flex-a-balls. The class will met from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Thursdays.
Step Aerobics: The heart-pumping, muscle-moving workout alternates step with muscle work. Led by Sue Driscoll, the cardio workout is a head-to-toe body strengthener. The class will be held from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Yoga: Certified yoga instructor Marcy Covey will lead the series of yoga classes. Participants will learn to center and balance themselves through poses, breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation. The classes will be held from 4:45 to 6 p.m. and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays. Participants may elect to take either one or two classes each week.
YouthFit “Move And Learn:” The eight-week series is designed for those between 7 and 17 years of age who are overweight or at risk for obesity. Each class will focus on an educational module regarding nutrition, physical activity and/or self-esteem, followed by an exercise game where the child can use what they learn in a physical exercise. The class will meet from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Zumba: The Latin-inspired dance exercise program uses a variety of basic dance styles set to international music such as merengue, salsa and reggaetone. Using principles of aerobic/fitness interval training and resistance training, Zumba is great for burning calories while sculpting and toning the body. The six-week program will be led by Cynthia Nicholas. The class will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays.
All programs are offered in the CMMC Health and Wellness Center, 12 High Street Medical Office Building.
Fees are assessed for participation in the programs and must be paid prior to beginning the program. Class registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Membership in the CMMC Wellness Center is open to the public.
