BETHEL — Summer wasn’t kind to Telstar Middle School rock band Myth.
Instead of cutting its first CD, the sixth-grade band dissolved in June due to creative differences.
However, out of Myth’s ashes rose Bethel metal rock band Midnite Haze, which is made up of Myth’s lead guitarist Ryan Vail and bassist David Pilgrim, both 13, and Vail’s 16-year-old brother Devin Vail as the drummer, band managers Shelly Corriveau and David Bartlett said.
Midnite Haze promptly picked up where Myth left off, working on its first album to be released in late 2010.
Three new songs – “Dark of the Rising,” “You,” and “Soul” – penned by Ryan Vail, the band’s lead vocalist, have been recorded at The Outlook studio in Bethel.
These songs can be heard on the band’s new Web site at www.midnitehaze.com.
“There’s more of a heavier edge to it,” said Corriveau, the Vails’ mother.
Ryan Vail, a backup vocalist on Myth, discovered he could sing lead vocals while playing guitar. That and Pilgrim’s desire to also sing split Myth apart, said Bartlett, the Vails’ grandfather.
Bartlett coined the new band’s name based on the youths’ appreciation of Jimi Hendrix music.
Midnite Haze has since performed at private parties and has twice opened for Rumford rock band Monsta.
Midnite Haze will perform at next month’s Telstar Middle School benefit concert, which will raise money for families in need, Corriveau said.
“They’re quite a bunch of musicians,” said Bartlett, who purchased a sound system and drum set for the band “to give these kids a chance. I felt that if they didn’t get the opportunity, they might never do it, and I saw something in them. They’re going places.”
After Telstar Middle School rock band Myth dissolved this summer, its lead guitarist Ryan Vail, left, and bass player David Pilgrim, both 13, formed new rock metal band Midnite Haze with Ryan’s 16-year-old brother Devin Vail as the band’s drummer. Midnite Haze has twice opened recently for Rumford rock band Monsta and is hard at work on its first album.
