NORWAY — Monday, Jan. 18, is a national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by serving others in the community. Called “A Day On, Not A Day Off,” this is the second year Norway Memorial Library will offer the program and match people with volunteer work at nonprofit organizations in downtown Norway.

The event is open to adults and teens in grades seven through 12. Volunteers will meet at the library at 12:30 p.m. for a brief introduction and will head to their designated sites at 1 p.m. for two hours of work at the organizations. They will return to the library at 3:30 for a program of reflection and refreshments that will end at 4.

Last year’s program involved 22 volunteers who worked at nine nonprofit organizations in Norway. Comments by participants included the following: “The organizations were prepared for us and we felt appreciated by them.” “I learned something about our community’s resources.” “It was good to offer this to individuals, pairs, or teams.”

Call Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309 to sign up as a volunteer or for more information. The deadline to register is Thursday, Jan. 8.
