MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls – Minot – Poland Adult Education’s winter/spring program has announced several course offerings. The Learning Center is also accepting new day and evening students, at least 17 years old, for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and GED testing.

January general interest classes include:

Smoking Cessation: The class is for those who are thinking about or have made the decision to quit smoking but are not sure how to do it successfully. The class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4; registration, $20.

Healthy Living I: Attendees will explore those areas that are preventing them from experiencing healthy living. Discussion will include nutrition, exercise, weight reduction and stress management. The class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20; registration, $6.

Chickens in Your Backyard: Chickens can be productive pets. Besides producing eggs and fertilizer, they also scavenge for ticks, beetles and other insects. Participants will learn about safety, nutrition and coop/yard set-up for raising chickens. The class will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19; registration, $6.

Holistic Animal Care: Participants will learn from a holistic veterinarian what to do to maintain optimal health in animals, large and small. Topics will include nutrition, parasite control, herbs, homeopathics and question time. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27; registration, $6.

Belly Dance Intermediate: Used for exercise, the class is fun but challenging. It is designed for those who have mastered the basics. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; registration, $25 for the six-week session beginning Tuesday, Jan. 12.

A Taste of Post-Holiday Fitness: Two fitness classes will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 and 14, for those who want to get back on track after the holidays. The cost is $6 each class.

Fitness for Life with Deb Conway: The class will include step aerobics and resistance exercises for tone and strength. The six-week ongoing sessions will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 21 through May. First class sign up will be at 6 p.m.; registration, $25 each session.

Heartsaver CPR/AED: Participants will receive training for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Heartsaver AED cards will be given upon successful completion and skills testing. The course is physically demanding. The class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1; registration, $50, due 14 days in advance.

Classes require a minimum number of prepaid registrations in order to run. Registration forms are available at mechanicfalls.maineadulted.org and should be mailed to P.O. Box 129, Mechanic Falls, ME 04256.

The adult education office will be closed through Monday, Jan. 4.
