AUBURN — Interviewing witnesses after an October fight that sent two men to a hospital intensive care unit, a woman told Lewiston Police Detective Roland Godbout that she had seen people tossing around a piece of wood and heard someone say, “Stick them and run.”

That night, Michael Gallo, 23, was stabbed four times in the lung and once in the spleen area, according to an affidavit by Godbout. James Cote, 36, had a stab wound that punctured his left lung.

Clayton Chapman III, 20, was charged with two counts of elevated aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault, one violation of a protection order and one count of criminal mischief.

Sidney Lord II, 19, was charged with two counts of elevated aggravated assault, one count of violation of condition of release and one count of criminal mischief.

Chapman pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday morning in Androscoggin County Superior Court. Lord pleaded not guilty at an earlier arraignment Dec. 11. The co-defendants are on a February trial list, according to a court clerk.

On the night of Oct. 17, Godbout wrote in his affidavit, Cote said he and Gallo were inside a Shawmut Street home when they heard a large bang and went outside to find Gallo’s girlfriend’s 2002 Ford Explorer with a smashed window and slashed tires.

Gallo’s girlfriend, Kirry Langlois, used to date Chapman and has a child with him.

“Langlois advised that Chapman is a jealous person and has stabbed one of her prior boyfriends in the past,” Godbout wrote.

Chapman and Lord were outside on the street. A fight broke out among the four men and one witness said she looked out her window at one point to see up to 10 people yelling at each other. A 2-by-4 and Gallo’s bloody shirt were both taken as evidence at the scene. Gallo later underwent surgery for his injuries.

Police also charged a juvenile with elevated aggravated assault as a result of the fight.

Lord is being represented by attorney Rob Ruffner and Chapman by attorney Don Hornblower. Lord had bail set at $20,000 cash or $40,000 surety, and Chapman at $10,000 cash or $25,000 surety. Both men remained in the Androscoggin County Jail on Tuesday.
