LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing at Central Maine Medical Center is offering a free puppet-making workshop, “Create a Puppet for Comfort,” for cancer patients, survivors and caregivers at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, at the Dempsey Center, 10 High St.

Bonita Potvin, a member of the Dempsey Center sewing group, will lead the workshop in creating fleece puppets that require no sewing experience. Participants are asked to bring scissors, white thread and a needle. The puppets are washable and do not contain buttons.

Potvin created the puppets as a way to lift the spirits of her 8-year-old granddaughter, who has cancer. “We forget that children need to be joyful,” said Potvin. “They often get lost in the traffic of the cancer.”

The workshop is limited to six participants and preregistration is required. To register, call the Dempsey Center at 795-8250 or toll-free at 1-877-336-7287. For more information, visit www.dempseycenter.org.
