William A. ‘Chic’ Carignan
1916 – 2009
LEWISTON — William A. “Chic” Carignan, 93, of Bucknum Street, Mexico, died Monday, Dec. 28, at Russell Park Manor surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Rumford, Dec. 12, 1916, a son of Willie A. and Anna (Cote) Carignan.
Chic was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School.
After graduation, he went to work for Oxford Paper Co. for a short time, then joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in England as an MP.
After the war, he went back to work for the Oxford Paper Co. and retired as a watchman assigned to the lower gate.
He married the love of his life, Agnes “Aggie” Convery on June 20, 1949, and together they celebrated 56 years of marriage. She died in 2005. He was a communicant of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and was a Golden Eagle member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was also a member of the St. Andrew’s Society of Maine and the 40+ Year Club at Boise Cascade. He enjoyed gardening and especially family gatherings. He was a great fan of the Boston Bruins and the New York Yankees.
Surviving are two brothers, Dr. Roland “Tibi” Carignan of Dixfield and the Rev. Raymond “Moots” Carignan, SSJ of Gulfport, Miss.; nieces, Cynthia Flaherty, Gloria Hargreaves, Pamela Gill and Deborah LaPerle; nephews, Dr. Peter Carignan, Paul Carignan, William “Bizz” Carignan, James Convery, Robert Convery and Raymond Convery; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; two brothers, BRO. Armand Carignan and Leo “Kiyo” Carignan; and nieces, Carmen Carignan Davis and Sandra (Irving) Carignan.
The family would like to offer a special thank-you to Chic’s girls, Jane McDonald, Carrie McPherson, Gayle McPherson and “Peaches,” and the staff at Russell Park Manor and Androscoggin Hospice.
