LISBON — Holding one of the more prolific offensive teams in the Mountain Valley Conference to just 30 points — and just eight made field goals — in a game would normally be cause for celebration in the cozy confines of Lisbon’s gymnasium.
But not when the home team made only five, and just one in the second half.
Taylor Massey turned a slow start into 12-point, 12-rebound night and led Hall-Dale to a Heal-Point-heavy 30-20 victory over Lisbon. Carylanne Wolfington added nine for the visiting Bulldogs (6-1), and Jess Woods added a pair of points and five rebounds.
“If we can hold teams to 30 points all year long, I’ll be pretty happy,” Lisbon coach Jake Gentle said. “We struggled offensively, but some nights you’ll have that.”
Lisbon, fresh off a two-week holiday-season layoff, had a hard time containing Massey in the second half, particularly when the Greyhounds (5-2) lost both Renee Moore and Kelsey Linnell to fouls.
“We knew that they were their main players, so we tried to push the ball to whoever they were guarding,” Massey said. “(Linnell) was on me a lot, so I would go to the middle, and try to get the ball inside to get her to foul.”
The strategy worked. Moore and Linnell had three fouls each by halftime, and both were out of the game relatively early in the second half.
“When both of them foul out, there’s not much we can do to guard (Massey),” Gentle said. “We’re not very big. We have to do the best we can, double down on her.”
Nine of Massey’s points came in the second half, along with seven of her rebounds. After Hall-Dale grabbed its first lead of the game late in the third quarter, the Greyhounds pulled to within one on a Linnell free throw. But after Wolfington hit a two and Linnell fouled out, Massey hit three of four from the charity stripe and put back a rebound of her own shot to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to six.
“Once Linnell went out in the fourth quarter, they just couldn’t match up with Massey on the inside,” Hall-Dale coach Brandon Terrill said. “We went to her every single time down the floor.”
Wolfington drained a pair of free throws to ice the game in the final minute.
Lisbon started the game on fire on both ends of the floor. The Greyhounds controlled play through the opening quarter, holding onto the ball for long periods of time. They led 11-4 at the first break.
By halftime, the lead was down to two at 16-14, and after Amber Cloutier (eight points) drained a 3-pointer from the right corner less than a minute into the second half, Lisbon didn’t hit another field goal.
Hall-Dale chipped away, getting four in a row from Massey and a deep trey from Wolfington to take its first lead as the third quarter came to a close.
“We kind of got lost there,” Gentle said. “Even with (Moore) out of the game in the second quarter, we still maintained the lead. When you lose kids to foul trouble, the kids have to play better. It just didn’t happen.”
