AUBURN — A Lewiston woman who went to an elementary school last year with a handgun tucked in her waistband pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of a firearm on school property.

But the misdemeanor charge against Tylor Austin, 31, of 108 Bartlett St., will be dropped if she steers clear of the law for a year, according to court papers.

Austin agreed to the arrangement in Androscoggin County Superior Court while awaiting trial.

Police arrested Austin as she sat in the principal’s office at Montello Elementary School on March 13. She had gone to school to pick up her children and was talking to Principal Deborah Goding when the gun was discovered.

The 9 mm handgun wasn’t loaded, police said.

After calling 911, school officials locked down the school mid-morning for about half-an-hour. Police arrived and took Austin into custody.

The mother of three students at the school, Austin claimed to have domestic issues and was carrying the gun for protection, police said. She wasn’t charged with carrying a concealed weapon because she wasn’t trying to hide the gun, police said.

Among the conditions of the plea agreement is that Austin must identify herself as being on deferred disposition if she is arrested or questioned by law enforcement and notify the District Attorney’s Office in writing of any contact with law enforcement within four days of the contact. She must tell the court about any address change and pay a $150 administrative fee to the District Attorney’s Office, according to court papers.

She must not have a firearm for the next year until the charge has been dropped. If she were to violate the terms of the agreement, she could be sentenced to up to six months in jail on the charge to which she pleaded guilty.

If she doesn’t violate the terms, the charge is expected to be dropped.
