RUMFORD — A Rumford man indicted last month on drug charges by an Oxford County grand jury was arraigned Tuesday in Oxford County Superior Court in Paris.
Brian R. Mack, 32, of 281 Ellis River Road, pleaded not guilty to aggravated trafficking in marijuana, aggravated marijuana cultivation, unlawful possession of psilocybin, and criminal forfeiture of 10 firearms.
Mack was released on $5,000 unsecured bail and ordered not to possess or use drugs or firearms.
Associate Justice Robert W. Clifford then scheduled the case for trial on March 15 in Oxford County Superior Court due to the felony trafficking and cultivation charges.
Contacted late Wednesday afternoon, Mack’s lawyer, James Martemucci of Portland, declined comment.
According to the indictments, Rumford police Detective Sgt. James Bernard said that on Aug. 19 in Rumford, Mack trafficked in marijuana, grew or cultivated more than five pot plants and used or was armed with a firearm at the time.
Bernard said Mack was also found with psilocybin, which is a hallucinogenic substance obtained from certain types of mushrooms indigenous to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Mexico and the United States.
The 10 seized firearms are:
• Witness .45-caliber pistol.
• Rossi 20-gauge single-shot shotgun.
• Marlin .30-30-caliber lever action rifle.
• Marlin .45-caliber rifle.
• Remington 12-gauge shotgun.
• Benelli 12-gauge “Supernova” shotgun.
• Marlin .22-caliber rifle.
• Marlin .22-caliber bolt-action rifle.
• Glenfield .22-caliber rifle model No. 60.
• Remington model No. 750.
The indictment further states that because the weapons were seized pursuant to a lawful search for drugs, the guns are forfeited to Maine.
Additionally, the grand jury found that Rumford police made a substantial contribution to the investigation, and thereby could be given the weapons.
