A Lewiston man is expected to plead guilty next week to a federal charge or charges stemming from an alleged scheme to buy and sell stolen tractors on the Internet auction site eBay, according to court filings.
Matthew Theriault, 25, was indicted last summer on federal charges of wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen goods, false statement in a loan application, possession of stolen goods and false statement to a government agency, among other counts.
He was returned to federal custody in November after his bail was revoked when he was summoned to court for allegedly smearing feces inside a motor vehicle belonging to someone else.
That charge — criminal mischief — along with other state charges, including driving with a suspended license, driving to endanger and criminal threatening, were dropped in Androscoggin County Superior Court last week.
Theriault was accused of selling three stolen Kubota tractors on eBay in the fall of 2006. Buyers in Pennsylvania, New York and Iceland agreed to pay $13,000, $10,000 and $14,000, respectively, for the tractors.
Theriault was facing up to 20 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines. He filed a motion for a change of plea hearing that is scheduled for Jan. 19 at U.S. District Court in Portland.
