FARMINGTON — A bunch of little snow gnomes have appeared on the front lawn of the Franklin County Courthouse to signify diversity and celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.
“It’s about celebrating diversity,” said Nancy Teel of Farmington, who helped make them. “We tied it in with the Martin Luther
King holiday and the theme we came up with is ‘Different is Normal in
Franklin County. Let’s Embrace Our Diversity.'”
Tell and Sylvia Yeaton, also of Farmington, intended to make each gnone different. The two women were inspired by an e-mail Yeaton received that featured
snow people.
“We just wanted to do it for fun,” Yeaton said. “We had a great time doing it.”
They made the gnomes at Yeaton’s home and transported them by pickup truck to the courthouse, where Yeaton works as a special projects coordinator in the county Emergency Management Agency.
They two made forms and used the snow on Yeaton’s deck to build a gnome holding a flag, a cat, a woman mourning the loss of life, a character that has big earrings and greens for hair, among others. They put them on a tarp, Yeaton said, and let them freeze. They brought them to the courthouse Sunday.
Sylvia Yeaton and Nancy Teel, both of Farmington, created these snow gnomes on the snow-covered lawn of the Franklin County Courthouse. The variety of gnomes are designed to be tied to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday with a theme to celebrate diversity.
