Regional School Unit 78 in the Rangeley Lakes area will hold elections to the new school board in participating towns or plantations on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Poll or meeting times are:
• 3 to 7 p.m., Dallas Plantation Town Office
• 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Rangeley Town Office
• 2 to 6 p.m., Sandy River Plantation Town Office
• 6 p.m., Magalloway Plantation meeting at Magalloway Town Hall
RANGELEY — Voters here and in three plantations will be asked Tuesday to elect candidates to a new joint school board.
Voters in Rangeley and Dallas and Sandy River plantations in Franklin County, and Magalloway Plantation in Oxford County approved reorganizing the former School Union 37 into Regional School Unit 78 in November 2009.
The new school board will take over as of July 1, Rangeley School Committee Chairwoman Ginny Nuttall said. In the meantime, the Rangeley School Committee will work with the new board for a smooth transition as soon as the election is over and the state Board of Education approves the new board, she said.
Ten board members will oversee the school system; five from Rangeley, two each from Dallas and Sandy River plantations, and one from Magalloway.
There are no contested races in the elections being held Tuesday, Jan. 19.
Rangeley had four candidates submit nomination papers with one three-year term having no candidates. Running for the committee from Rangeley are Barbara Burgess for a one-year term; Pamela Ellis and Virginia Nuttall, two-year terms; and Laura Haley, three-year term. Burgess, Ellis and Nuttall currently serve on the Rangeley School Committee.
Seeking one of two seats from Sandy River Plantation is Jennifer Farmer, a current member of the School Committee. No one took out papers for the second term.
William Roy and Nicholas Gumprecht of Dallas Plantation are both seeking available seats on the School Committee. Roy is a current board member.
Carol Hall of Magalloway Plantation, a School Committee member, is also running for election.
On Tuesday, Feb. 9, officials are planning to introduce the new board, have a presentation by the Maine School Management Association for them, and a supper for all members and the Regional School Unit Planning Committee, Nuttall said. It will be followed by the regular Rangeley School Committee meeting.
