OXFORD — A small chimney fire was extinguished Friday before it could cause serious damage to a residence.
Chief Scott Hunter of the Oxford Fire Department said a passing highway crew noticed smoke at the home of Walter Rideout at 188 Gore Road shortly before 9:45 a.m. When they went to investigate, they found about a foot of flame coming out of a stovepipe.
Hunter said the pipe from the wood-burning stove was almost flush with the two-story house. The Oxford Fire Department and Oxford Police Department were sent to the home. The Paris Police Department was also called, but returned after the fire was quickly put out.
“It actually didn’t catch the house on fire, but it charred it up,” Hunter said.
Hunter said he instructed Rideout to correct the stove’s installation to avoid further problems.
