AUGUSTA — Leeds Selectman Errol “Abe” Additon was recently appointed to fill a vacancy on the governing board of the Maine Municipal Association.

Additon served seven years on the local school board before running for selectman in the early 1990s. He served one six-year stint, took a break and was elected again in 2003.

A longtime member of the MMA Legislative Policy Committee, Additon will serve two years on the board.

The MMA executive committee governs the association, which works on behalf of Maine’s nearly 500 cities, towns and plantations.

Meanwhile, Alfred Selectman John Sylvester was recently elected president of the MMA Executive Committee, while Sanford Town Manager Mark Green will serve as vice president, MMA officials announced Friday.
All of the terms were effective Jan. 1.

Sylvester was re-elected last March to a fifth three-year term as Alfred selectman. He also has served as chairman of the 12-Town Group and the York County Budget Committee. He served the town many years as a planning board member before being elected selectman.

Sylvester served as MMA vice president in 2009, as well as chairing the MMA Legislative Policy Committee.

Green, who was named Maine town manager of the year in 2009, will chair the Legislative Policy Committee as part of his role as the new MMA vice president. Like Sylvester, Green has been active for years in the MMA.

Green has worked as Sanford manager since 2004 and previously managed the towns of York, Windham and Buckfield, as well as serving as assistant manager of the city of Portland.

Also named to leadership positions at the MMA, include:
• Oakland Town Manager Peter Nielsen, elected to a three-year term on the executive committee after filling a vacancy on the panel for the past year. Nielsen managed the town of Wilton from 2002 until being hired in Oakland last year. He also has worked as manager of the towns of Wayne and Clinton, and has served on the Legislative Policy Committee since 2004.

• Hampden Mayor Matthew Arnett, elected to a three-year term on the executive committee. Arnett is a retired engineer, Protestant minister and college professor and has been involved in various roles relating to municipal and school interests in the Penobscot County area.

• Calais City Councilor Joyce Maker, elected to a three-year term on the executive board. Maker is a retired financial aid director for Washington County Community College and has served on numerous educational boards. She has been involved in municipal and community activities in the Calais area for several years.

Members of the MMA Executive Committee also serve on the association’s Property & Casualty Pool Board of Directors and the MMA Workers Compensation Fund Board of Trustees.
