Deloris L. (Seals) Field
1926 – 2010
SOUTH PARIS – Deloris L. (Seals) Field, 84, died Friday, Jan. 15, at Market Square Health Care Center, South Paris, where she had resided for under two weeks.
Deloris, the daughter of Lee and Mary McCush Seals, was born in St. Joseph, Mo., on Jan. 2, 1926. She grew up in “St. Joe” with her six brothers and sisters in a home full of love, laughter, music and great home cooking. After graduating from Central High School, she secured a position with Bellas Hess Retail in St. Joseph.
On June 28, 1946, Deloris married her husband of 62 years, Arthur Field, who passed away in 2008. They met and dated while Arthur was stationed at Rosencrans Army Air Base. When Arthur wanted to return to his hometown of South Paris, Deloris gave up her career and her love of the city, to build their home in Maine.
Combining her love of children and church, Deloris taught Sunday school at the First Congregational Church, South Paris, for several years. Parents and children alike loved “Mrs. Field.” She and Arthur were members of the American Legion, post 72, serving as presidents of the legion and auxillary simultaneously. In the early 1960s, Deloris was instrumental in founding the Oxford Hills Music Boosters, raising money for uniforms and equipment through fundraisers such as bringing the Air Force band to the area and hosting folk music evenings. As a level A-2 square dancer, Deloris served in various capacities, including president of the Swinging Bears Club. She and Arthur were known to dance as many as four nights a week for many years.
Following her retirement from Sears Roebuck Catalog Store, where she worked for 25 years, she volunteered for a number of years at the Guy E. Rowe Elementary School, where she helped to run the school store and work in the library and classrooms.
Mrs. Field, her husband, and their beloved dog, Buttons, traveled extensively in their motor home across the United States, reaching 49 out of the 50 states, including Alaska. These adventures were shared with her children and grandchildren and included rafting down the Colorado River in Arizona, off-road jeeping in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and celebrating her anniversary on the chuck wagon in Yellowstone, in the French Quarters of New Orleans and a myriad of other fun locations.
Deloris is survived by daughter, Janice, of South Paris, daughter, Donna and son-in-law, Ron Goodspeed of Exeter, N.H.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Field Goodspeed and husband, Aaron Parnes, M.D., of Baltimore, Md.; grandson, Tyler Beck Goodspeed of Cambridge, Mass.; brother, John and wife, Lucille Seals, of St. Joseph, Mo.; sister, Rose and husband, Everett Hughes, of Colorado Springs, Co.; brother-in-law, Ken Blanton of Boyce, La.; many nieces, nephews; and her dear friend, Lewis Crothers of Tayport, Scotland.
Deloris will be remembered every day for so much including her unconditional love, dedication to family, caring nature, generosity and her unsurpassed pies and rolls!
The family wishes to express a heart felt thank-you to Androscoggin Hospice and the caregivers at Market Square.
