When a disaster happens, such as has in Haiti, the first quotes from public officials are, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to them …”

To whom are we praying? The God that has permitted such a disaster to happen? Who are we praying for? The dead? They no longer need our prayers.

Are we praying for those who are lying in the streets, bloody and hurt, with no water, food or shelter?

Wake up, America. It is time to stop praying and take action. This is supposed to be the richest country, yet many American children are homeless and starving. Why? Because people don’t want to go the extra mile and pay more taxes so that each child can be provided for.

The federal and state governments are cutting crucial programs that help children, the elderly and those who are physically, mentally and/or emotionally disabled.

It is time to empty our pockets and feed the hungry and shelter the homeless so we can avoid a major disaster in our own backyard.

Or, should we let our public officials say, “We are sorry; but our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
