Officers of the Musical and Literary Society were installed last evening by John B. St. Pierre and Edmund Leblanc. The club was never before in such a prosperous condition. A committee was appointed last evening to arrange a Lundi Gras party for the members of the club and their lady friends. A smoke talk followed, among the speakers being L.T. Chabot, Dr. J. A. Choquette and J.G. Chabot.
50 years ago, 1960
Capt. John W. Harkins of Lewiston police was unbeatable yesterday morning at the pinochle table in the department’s guardroom. Playing during a lunch hour break with Officer Kenneth Woods, the captain came up with a double “mit” in clubs, lacking only the nine card to have every trump card in play. Needless to say, their opponents — Officers Norman Poulin and Paul Plante — went down to a terrible, rapid defeat. In fact, they never had a chance.

The Lewiston Finance Committee gave tentative approval to the city’s spending $2,500 in Community Development Block Grant funds to appraise two properties the city wants to buy for a walkway connecting the new police station with Lisbon Street.
Pending City Council approval, Herbert Cushing will be paid $2,500 to appraise Mary’s Tavern and Eddies Wheel and Deal for the city. The two properties may be bought and torn down to make way for a walkway connecting the new Park Street station with Lower Lisbon Street.
