JAY — Board of Selectmen Chairman Steve McCourt told the board that police have found no illegal truck exhaust systems.
Jay police have been patrolling more heavily in certain areas of town where residents have complained about loud trucks and the use of engine brakes, he said Monday. State police have also stepped up patrols.
Residents wanted signs to be installed asking truckers to limit the use of the engine brakes. But selectmen postponed their decision until they got information from police on their findings.
Jay Police have gone into those areas at times indicated on the
complaints, and at other times and found no issues, McCourt said.
State police found no illegal exhaust pipes during patrols but did find four violations of other kinds, he said.
They did hear one engine brake being used in an area but it was not a violation, he said.
To buy and erect the signs in several places would cost about $1,300. Plus the signs are unenforceable and the engine brakes are a safety component of a truck, according to selectmen.
