RUMFORD — The wintry mess of sleet and freezing rain Sunday night and Monday morning caused some vehicles to slide off area roads, but no one was hurt and damage was minimal, police said.

Dixfield Police Department Sgt. Jeff Howe said a vehicle traveling west along Route 2 near the Common Road slid off the highway at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. A vehicle behind it slid into it.

At about the same time, three vehicles coming upon the scene on Route 2 rounded a corner and slid into snowbanks. Then a tractor-trailer behind them went out of control with the trailer clipping a snowbank, he said.

At about 1 a.m. Monday, another vehicle slid off the Common Road and into a snowbank.

In Rumford, Sgt. Tracey Higley said a vehicle slid off Route 108 and into a snowbank at 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mexico police Chief Jim Theriault said he had had no reports of vehicles off roads there.
