Area fire departments respond to 20 High St. in Lisbon Falls to assist in extinguishing a house fire Monday.
LISBON — A Lisbon Falls woman suffered minor
burns to her hands when she attempted to quell a fire, and her son had to be rescued from a roof by firemen at their 20 High
St. home shortly before noon on Monday.
Deborah Bernier, 58, had been
working in her home office where she had a candle burning. She left the
room to check on a pellet furnace when the smoke alarm sounded, according to fire Chief P. Sean Galipeau.
She unsuccessfully attempted to snuff the fire with a quilt and
then fled outside, Galipeau said. Her son Joshua, 34, who was sleeping in a third-floor room when he heard his mother’s screams and the smoke alarm, exited
through a window jumping to a porch roof. Firemen used a ladder to lower him to the ground.
He was not injured, Galipeau said, but his mother was transported by
Lisbon Emergency to Park Hill Hospital in Brunswick for treatment of
the burns to her hands.
Five adults lived in the home owned by Bernier and her husband, Fred.
An investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded the
fire was caused by the candle. Galipeau estimated damage to the wood-frame, single-family home at $90,000, but it was not considered a total loss. It was insured, he said. The Red Cross arranged for the family to stay at a hotel in Brunswick.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 25 minutes and
cleared the scene in less than two hours. Topsham Fire Department’s
Rapid Intervention Unit responded to the scene. Durham Fire Department filled in at the Lisbon Falls station and Lewiston Fire Department filled in at the E.T. Smith Hose Co. in Lisbon village.
