Lewiston Detective Lee Jones walks away from 96 Winter St. in Lewiston on Tuesday after a brief foot chase. The chase ensued when Jones ran into a wanted Bowdoin man while at the home of the suspect’s girlfriend, who was arrested on outstanding warrants.
LEWISTON — The boyfriend of a local woman got a surprise when he drove to her home to see her Tuesday. Police were at the 96 Winter St. home of Angela Despres, 25, to follow up on an investigation, Detective Lee Jones said.
When Byron Smith, 30, of Bowdoin came to her door, he was greeted by Jones. Smith slammed the door in Jones’ face and started running down the street. Jones pursued him and caught up with Smith near Avon Street.
Jones said he had recognized Smith as a habitual offender whose license had been suspended.
“He didn’t want to go to jail,” Jones said. But that’s where Smith ended up Tuesday after he got winded during the chase, Jones said.
“He tired out quick,” Jones said.
Smith was being held at Androscoggin County Jail late Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $300 cash bail, a corrections officer said.
Smith was wanted on two warrants, one for failing to pay a fine on a drug possession charge; the other, for driving after suspension, Jones said. Despres, who stayed behind in her home, was arrested on a warrant charging negotiating a worthless instrument, Jones said.
She later posted $25 bail and was released from the jail.
