PARIS — The Board of Selectmen did not take a formal vote Monday on whether to endorse a proposed Oxford casino, but three of the four members present expressed support for the project.

Black Bear Entertainment LLC, a group of Maine-based investors, is seeking to put a question on November’s ballot to see if voters will support a resort casino in Oxford. The group says the project will bring jobs to the area, result in millions of dollars of tax revenue for state and agricultural funds, and correct a number of concerns brought up regarding a 2008 casino proposal.

Opponents of the plan say it will not be a significant economic engine and will lead to an increase in social problems.

Resident Ron Fitts asked the board if they wanted to make any comments about the project in light of statements of support by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce, Oxford selectmen and the Oxford Economic Development Advisory Committee.

“I supported it last time, but the board chose not to seek a resolution to support it,” chairman David Ivey said.

In October 2008, Ivey motioned to support a casino project but did not receive a second. In that year, Las Vegas-based Olympia Gaming was proposing the construction of a $184 million resort casino in Oxford. The measure was defeated at a statewide vote the next month.

Selectman Raymond Glover said his opinion had not changed since Ivey’s first proposal. In 2008, Glover said he believed the casino would add jobs and value to the area, but did not think “economic development based on gambling is beneficial.”

Selectman Lloyd “Skip” Herrick said he took his father to Hollywood Slots in Bangor over the weekend for his 92nd birthday.

“He had a great time,”Herrick said. “It’s not my cup of tea.”

However, Herrick also said he would support the proposal.

“I say anything that brings jobs to this area, and economic growth, and I say any time any private investors want to come into this area and invest their dollars and not taxpayer dollars, I have no problem with that and I will probably vote in favor of it,” he said.

Selectman Glen Young joked that he had been to Hollywood Slots himself last year and seen Herrick and his father.
