Famous for his superpipe amplitude and exploits, Simon Dumont of Bethel will be joining Seth Wescott (Carrabassett Valley) and Dan Marion of Windham when the Maine contingent competes in the ski and snowboard X competitions at Winter X Games 14 in Aspen, Colo., on Jan. 28 through the 31.
Dumont has medaled in superpipe at every event since 2004, often trading with Tanner Hall for the top spot in these competitions. Dumont was the first skier to win back-to-back superpipe gold in 2005. He also finished second overall in the 2009 Dew Tour superpipe championship and he set a world quarterpipe record by rising to 35 feet above the coping in 2008
The 540-foot long, 22-foot deep superpipe is 75 feet from lip-to-lip with a pitch of 18 degrees. This translates into maximum amplitude and speed for the athletes to perform their tricks. In the final, each skier takes three runs, and the skier with the best score out of their three finals runs will be crowned champion in the superpipe. The men’s superpiple final will air live, Jan. 31 on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. For a complete television schedule, go to www.xgames.com.
In addition to defending his 2006 Torino Snowboard Cross gold medal in Vancouver, Wescott is seeking to capture the elusive Winter X Games snowboarder X gold this year. Although he has competed in 12 Winter X Games, the most appearances of any snowboarder in the event’s history, the gold in snowboarder X competition still eludes the Carrabasset graduate. But Wescott has still collected an impressive eight medals, including an Ultracross gold in 2002. He has been a regular on the U.S. Snowboard Team since 1998. In 2008, he finished second in the overall FIS World Cup standings. Wescott has a 10-year contract as an ambassador to Sugarloaf and uses his Olympic gold medal status to promote the sport in Maine.
Snowboarder X consists of a downhill course over 3,500 feet long, filled with tabletop jumps, banked turns, rollers and gaps. Scoring is simple: seeds are determined via time trials. The snowboarder X finals will air live on Jan. 30 on ESPN at 4 p.m.
Marion, also a CVA graduate, will also compete in the superpipe. He has also earned podium spots at the North American Open, Mount Snow Open and the World Skiing Invitational.
Alex Tuttle, 19, of Stratton will also compete in the snowboardcross alongside Wescott. Joining Marion in the halfpipe competition will be CVA alumni Matt Duhamel and Banks Gilberti, who graduated CVA in 2009 and 2008, respectively. In the event’s history, a total of 10 CVA students and alumni have qualified for the X Games.
