FRYEBURG — A bridge over the Saco River remained closed Wednesday night after rain and warm temperatures flooded a portion of Route 113.

Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Department of Transportation, said the Weston Bridge and about a half a mile of highway west of the span was shut down Monday morning. Floodwaters had covered a portion of the road and risen to within about 18 inches of the bridge.

Latti said chunks of ice that had broken free had formed an ice dam upstream from the bridge. He said that in addition to the flooding, there was the potential of damage to the bridge if ice or other debris in the water hit the structure while moving downstream.

Traffic was rerouted onto Route 302 or Corn Shop Road. Latti said the water level had dropped 3 feet between Monday and Tuesday. The MDOT hopes to remove ice with a grader and salt the road to have it reopened on Thursday, but that it will depend on conditions at the site.
