FARMINGTON — A local man was charged with driving while impaired by drugs after his vehicle hit a parked car and continued on into a snowbank Tuesday, according to police officer Shane Cote’s report.

Robert Kanner, 22, told police he was taking prescription medicine at the time of the accident, Cote said. As Kanner drove out of a parking lot on Middle Street at about 4:55 p.m., his 1986 Volvo hit a parked car and pushed it into another vehicle. Kanner continued on, failed to make a left turn onto High Street and hit a snowbank and a speed limit sign.

The first vehicle he hit was a 1994 Toyota owned by Leane Morin of Whitefield; the second was a 2001 Jeep owned by Lauri Dean of Gorham. Neither owner was in her vehicle at the time, the report said.

Morin’s car sustained $250 damage; Dean’s and Kanner’s each sustained about $100 damage.

Kanner was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence/impaired by drugs and later released on $3,000 unsecured bail for a March 18 court appearance.

“People can be impaired on a prescription drug if they are not taking it exactly as prescribed; or if it says not to drive, they shouldn’t,” said Police Department secretary Bonnie Pomeroy.
“It can affect motor skills, putting everyone at risk.”
