On April 16, Commander Peary will give an illustrated lecture on his experiences in reaching the North Pole. He will stop over in Lewiston on his way to the Maritime Provinces where he is to lecture in Halifax, St. John, Moncton and possibly Fredericton or Amherst. On his return to New York, he will lecture at Calais and Biddeford.
50 years ago, 1960
Twin City residents deciding to mail a package by parcel post this coming Monday may get a slight shock at the increased rates if they don’t remember that the U.S. Postal Department will put a parcel post rate hike into effect Feb. 1.
The rates, effecting only fourth class mail, those packages or bundles over 16 ounces, will vary as to weight and zone designation, reminded Postmasters Roger Albert of Lewiston and Donald C. Gautier of Auburn.

A program to reduce retailers’ check losses and improve methods of detecting and prosecuting shoplifters were among issues discussed Tuesday by the newly reactivated Retail Advisory Council of the Lewiston-Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce. Members of the council are Dora Clark, Michael Sacks, Chamber President Harold B. Patrick, Norman Bilodeau, Lincoln Hayes, Stephen Costello, Gary Ferguson, Michael Torti and Dan Labbe.
