NORWAY — The Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 met on Jan. 13, with President Thelma Denlinger presiding.

The charter was draped in memory of two deceased members, Dorothy Shackley and Pauline Pushard. Taking part in ceremony were Denlinger; Chaplain Christine Weiss; Rose Moulton, who draped the charter; and Ellen Snow, who held the charter. Snow was a longtime friend to Shackley and looked out for her for many years.

Weiss reported that she delivered 90 Thanksgiving cards, 90 Christmas cards an 18 birthday cards to Western Maine’ Veterans Home during December and November. 

Snow reported that she has donated baby items and furniture, estimated value of $840, to Community Services. She also donated ice skates to Norway Recreation and several items to Responsible Pet Care. 

The unit voted to make a donation to the Stone-Smart Memorial Fund in Dorothy Shackley’s memory and a donation to the veteran’s home activity fund in Pauline Pushard’s Memory. 

Barbara Henley, children and youth chairwoman, reported that she will go to the Guy E. Rowe School to read books to second-graders.

Henley, Americanism chairwoman, reported on the folded pocket flag program. They have been folded and the cards that go with them have all been printed. They will be sent to troops serving the country.

Denlinger reported on sending goodies to troops overseas. The package was mailed to a serviceman in the Air Force who was on the front lines. Items will be shared with all members of his unit. The postage to mail the package was donated by unit members and friends. 

The unit voted to award three awards to graduating seniors from Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School: the Myra Stevens Award, the Stone-Smart Marion Millett Award and the Stone-Smart Award. Each are for $200.

The unit will upgrade their constitution and by-laws. Joyce Clifford, Thelma Denlinger and Kim Hansen will work on the project. 

The meeting was preceded by a chili and corn chowder supper with salads, corn muffins and finger rolls and cakes for dessert. Rose Moulton assisted.
