100 years ago, 1910

Many students who are studying the French language have secured seats for the French play which will be given this evening at the Empire for the benefit of the Lewiston Firemen’s Relief Association. The costumes arrived yesterday from Boston and everything is in readiness. The drama, “Le Drapeau de Carillon,” has been presented once this season with great success. The curtain will go up at 8:15 o’clock.

50 years ago, 1960

An Auburn woman says yesterday afternoon’s two loud sonic booms caused her ceiling to crack.

A Mrs. Couture of Mill Street called headquarters a couple of minutes after the two blasts rocked the Twin City area as two jet planes flew overhead. She said her new ceiling had cost $400 to have installed.

Lewiston police said they received no reports of damage.

25 years ago, 1985

Robert Mathieu, sales supervisor for Federal Distributors of Lewiston, will be a guest speaker at Thursday’s meeting of the Patronesses of St. Mary’s General Hospital, Lewiston.

His topic concerns the responsible use of alcohol. A film titled “Know When to Say When,” distributed nationwide by Anheuser Busch Inc. in conjunction with its Operation ALERT program, will be viewed. 

Operation ALERT deals with alcohol abuse in the community and is designed to encourage people to be responsible in the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
