SALEM — MSAD 58 Adult and Community Education will offer a Class B truck driver training course, which includes Class B truck or bus endorsements, at Mt. Abram High School, Room 16. The course will meet from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 23, and will run through early May.

The program is new this semester in MSAD 58 and uses PTDIA Competency-Based Curriculum. It is open to adults from the community and high school students. To register, participants must be at least 16 years of age and hold a current Class C driver’s license. Students will learn the skills needed for entry level jobs in over-the-road driving.

The instructor, Duane Marquis of the Skowhegan Driving School, was a truck driver in the U.S. Army from 1978 to 1984 and has since driven tractor trailers for various companies hauling logs, wood chips and other commodities. He has been self-employed as a mechanic and has served as a school bus driver for MSAD 54 since 1997. In 2001, he joined the Skowhegan Driving School as a certified car, truck and school bus instructor.

Students must complete 42 hours of classroom time and 30 hours of “road and range” to be eligible for their permit. The course will run with a minimum of six students and with a maximum of 12. Students who wish to earn their bus endorsement must be 21 years of age or older at the start of the course. The goal of the program is to guide each student to achieve their license by the end of the course.
