A Poland man was badly hurt while snowmobiling Saturday morning after another sled crashed into him.

Glenn Arsenault, 22, was the second in a party of four snowmobiling on a trail in Glenwood Plantation in Aroostook County. According to a press release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Arsenault and other members of the party were moving too fast when they came upon a sharp left turn.

Arsenault bailed from his sled when he realized he wasn’t going to make the turn. As Arsenault was getting up, a 14-year-old from Windham crashed into him, flipped over and landed in the woods. According to the release, the juveline was traveling too fast to avoid Arsenault.

The fourth in the party was also involved the collision, but was not listed as injured in the release.

Arsenault was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor by LifeFlight with injuries to his collarbone, back, leg and left arm. The 14-year-old was sent to Houlton Regional Hospital where he was treated and released.

“This was a case of two out of the four the operators overdriving their machines, as they could not stop or even negotiate a corner,” said Lt. Tom Ward of the Maine Wardens Service in the release.

The incident is under investigation, and speed is considered a factor.
