SCARBOROUGH — Krishna Das, a singer of Indian kirtan-style devotional music, will hold a traditional kirtan, an evening of energetic call and response chanting, on Saturday, Feb. 20, at The Landing at Pine Point.

Krishna Das, born Jeffrey Kagel (in 1947 in Long Island, N.Y.), has been recording CDs of devotional Indian chants since 1996 as a sharing of his lifetime spiritual journey.

On Sunday, Feb. 21, he will give a Heart of Devotion workshop from 2 to 5 p.m., also at The Landing.

The kirtans Krishna Das leads worldwide often build from a meditative tempo to a high-paced catharsis. During some chants, it is common for audience members to stand up and dance. His music blends Western melodic sensibilities and Indian tradition with modern influences.

was first exposed to Indian culture and spirituality in his early 20s. While living in India for nearly three years, he was drawn to the practices of Bhakti Yoga and kirtan.

Over the years, he has made numerous pilgrimages throughout India. He has studied Theravadan Buddhist meditation practices and has been initiated into Tibetan Buddhist practices. He is now devoted to singing and teaching.
