LISBON — The Pejepscot Sno-Chiefs Snowmobile Club and the Farmers Draft Horse, Mule and Pony Club are once again gearing up for their 17th annual winter fun day fundraiser, The World’s Greatest Sleigh Ride.

It will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. in a large field and wooded area on Upper Main Street in Lisbon Falls.

In the past 16 years they have raised more than $39,000 for the Pine Tree Society for handicapped children and adults, said Chairman Steve Curtis.

“If you wonder what brings people back every year, well that’s easy — horse-drawn sleigh rides through scenic snow-covered fields and woods, food and family fun.”

“Not to mention Louise’s delicious homemade doughnuts, which are always a highlight of the event for certain sweet-toothed attendees.”

In the last 16 years the Curtis family has rolled out more than 16,000 homemade doughnuts. If you wonder what it takes for that many doughnuts, Steve said, “It’s lots and lots of elbow grease, 480 pounds of sugar, 960 pounds of flour, 32 8-ounce tins of cinnamon, 17 4-ounce tins of nutmeg, 48 24-ounce cans of baking powder, 80 dozen eggs, 48 gallons of whole milk, 380 pounds of lard and a ton of pinches of salt.”

“There is one unnamed dedicated doughnut connoisseur who reportedly gets there early every year to buy more than three dozen of the doughy orbs of lard-laden, luxury-eating, sugar-covered, mouth-watering doughnuts and stashes them in his truck, according to reliable sources,” Curtis said.

In addition to doughnuts, coffee, cold drinks, stew, hot dogs and lots more food are always available.

“This is just plain good old-fashioned family fun for a great cause,” Curtis said.

Sleigh ride donations are $4 for adults and $3 for children. For more information, call Gordon Curtis at 353-2200 or Steve Curtis at 353-6162. There will be signs directing people where to go on the day of the event.
