LEWISTON — The city of Lewiston is accepting applications for the annual $500 Alfred A. Plourde Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to the Lewiston High School senior who is pursuing a post-secondary education and shows the most interest and promise in a career in public service.

The scholarship, in memory of one of Lewiston’s most popular mayors, was established in 1990 by donations from friends and family.

The application deadline is Thursday, April 15, and an application must consist of an essay of 1,000 words or less on “The Role of the Young Political Leader in the New Millennium”; a high school transcript copy; a statement of public service career goal and major in post-secondary education; and name, address and phone number.

Mayor Laurent F. Gilbert Sr. will narrow down the applicants to three finalists, and the winning senior will be selected by the Lewiston City Council. The award will be presented to the winning student by City Council President Steve Morgan at the May 4 City Council meeting.

Students may forward their application to Community Relations Coordinator Dottie Perham-Whittier, City Administrator’s Office, Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine St., Lewiston, ME 04240-7242 or e-mail [email protected].
