John T. ‘Tom’ Gorman Jr.
1930 – 2010

YARMOUTH — John T. (Tom) Gorman Jr., 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, at his Bay Square at Yarmouth residence, after a long illness.

A lifelong resident of Yarmouth, Tom was born in Nashua, N.H., on May 25, 1930, the son of John T. and Barbara B. Gorman.He attended Yarmouth schools and was active in the Boy Scouts, the national defense effort and qualified for his pilot’s license at the age of 17. He graduated from Cheverus High School in 1949. The yearbook noted, “Tom is a swell fellow who never says much but is always willing to help. One of the ‘brains’ of the senior class.” He received his bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University in 1954.

He was a member of the L.L. Bean family and spent his working years with the company. He had many friends and was a longtime member of the Yarmouth Lions Club, the Men’s Club and Sacred Heart Church. He traveled extensively and enjoyed coaching youth baseball, motorcycling, snowmobiling and flying his Piper airplane.

During his later years, he established a philanthropic foundation and was very active in aiding underprivileged residents of the state of Maine. Beneficiaries included those with mental health problems, cancer and those in need of food and aging issues. Thousands of very poor Maine people have benefited and will continue to benefit from his generosity.

He is survived by his two brothers and their wives, James W. Gorman and wife, Maureen and Leon A. Gorman and wife, Lisa; and numerous nephews and nieces.
