JAY — While the 2010 Winter Olympics are going on in Canada, Spruce Mountain Ski Club members are hosting their own games during school vacation.

“It’s just some community activities planned for February vacation and open to the public, just to get more people acclimated with the mountain and what we have there,” club President Judy Diaz said Friday.

Participants do not have to be a member of the club and all activities are free, except for a $5 registration fee for the Dummy Down Hill race on Saturday, Feb. 20. The events will kick off at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, with the Red Sled Luge. Participants are asked to bring their own red plastic sleds.

A Mountain Dew Race will be held at 1 p.m. Skiing and snowboarding lessons are ongoing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, to Friday, Feb. 19, for $10 an hour. There will be a 2.3K cross-country or snowshoe trek at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the cross-country arena. Bring your skis or snowshoes.

A GPS Scavenger Hunt with the Healthy Community Coalition will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16. If interested, people are asked to reserve times at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., because of a limited number of global position systems available. More information is available at sprucemountain.org.

Ski and snowboard helmet fittings will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A snowball shot put and discus throw will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. A plastic shovel race will be held at noon for those who bring a shovel they can ride downhill.

Area firefighters and police officers will participate along with kids at 1 p.m. the same day in the Fire Hose and Donut Relay. Firefighters on skis will have to transfer hoses to team members, while police on snowshoes will have to transfer donuts on to a ski pole, Diaz said.

Bowling with frozen turkeys will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19. Sign-ups in are in the lodge. The Dummy Down Hill race will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20. Instructions are available at the lodge. The dummy can be anything under 75 pounds that would make it down the hill on skis, with the exception of glass, Diaz said.

To cap the week, there will be a bonfire, she said.
