Skip Girouard, co-owner of Dube’s Flowers in Lewiston, really enjoys delivering flowers. People’s faces light up, they are often surprised, and he says it makes his day to put a smile on someone’s face. Over the past 30 years, most of the deliveries have been like that, though there have been one or two that left him shaking his head. One thing is for sure, he says: He loves flowers.

Have you ever had a woman turn down the flowers? Over the years I’ve had a couple. One woman — her boyfriend caused a hassle — and she threw the roses in the waste can. A dozen roses.

Strangest request? I have had a lot of strange requests, but we do special requests for funerals. A person asked to have an arrangement made of an aircraft, because their relative had died in a plane crash. I had two days to do it, but that was a tough one; having to do the wings.

Is there a delivery that stands out more than most? The little old ladies, like when I go to Maison Marcotte and D’Youville or a hospital. Sometimes I get to bring it (the flowers) right to their room and they just light right up.

What is your favorite flower? Wow, I don’t know, I like them all. They are all beautiful.

Most common reaction to flower delivery? They’re surprised. A lot of them say “For me? These can’t be for me.” My driver just delivered two big dish gardens to two people in the same house. They were shocked and called up and asked if we were sure we delivered them to the right people. We did.

How often do you deliver to men? We deliver to quite a few, mostly to women, but we do deliver quite a bit to men.

Ever suspected someone was sending flowers to themselves? We actually have a woman who orders flowers for herself, and has them sent to herself at work. Yes, we have that once in a while.

How is the job different on Valentine’s Day? Well, Valentine’s is on a Sunday this year, so we’re trying to figure out if Friday will be the biggie. Friday and Saturday will be busy; we have six drivers.

Have you ever delivered flowers to the wrong person? No, we don’t make those kinds of mistakes at Dube’s. My wife wouldn’t allow it. I did forget to change my hat once while delivering to a hospital. I’m a Yankees fan. I had my Yankees hat on and I delivered a Red Sox arrangement to a guy. He almost threw me out of the room and asked what I was doing in his room with that hat on.

Have you ever felt like you were a tool in someone’s desperate attempt to win back the heart of someone? Yes, a couple of times. The lady who threw them in the trash for one. She asked if I knew who the flowers were from, and when I said no, I don’t, she said “I’ll show you who they’re from.” Then she threw them in the waste can. Most of the time those roses work though. I used to have a saying when I worked on the radio: “Never underestimate the power of the flower.”

Be honest, you’ve peeked at a few cards, haven’t you? No. We know most of the time anyway, because we have to write them.
