100 years ago, 1910

Sports fans are looking forward to the great wrestling match which will come off in City Hall next Wednesday evening when Emile Maupas will meet Jim Prokos the Greek. It looks now as if the match will be one of the best ever seen in this city for both men are good and are evenly matched. Maupas is a great favorite here among the French people while Prokos will have a big following on the night of the match from the many Greeks of not only Lewiston but from Augusta and other parts of the state.

50 years ago, 1960

Private school students in Lewiston will continue riding the city-financed school buses this week.

The Education Board a few weeks ago announced it was working on a “solution” that reportedly involves the local parochial schools paying a share of the transportation costs.

The Legislature last month declined to legalize the transportation of private students on public buses. Lewiston carries more than 600 parochial school students daily.

How many teams can fit into the Auburn Mall for a trivia tournament to benefit the Androscoggin County United Way?

On Saturday, March 9, trivia experts from around the area will assemble for a day of challenging fun and to raise money to help 19 area human-service agencies.

The answer to “How many teams can fit into the Auburn Mall?” is 100. The entrance fee is $20 per team, all of which will be donated to the United Way.
