100 years ago, 1910

Cohen and Harris Minstrels were at the Empire last evening and made a favorable impression, giving a snappy and unique show. A pleasing feature was the opening when the pictures of old-time minstrel men were thrown upon the screen and the company sang the song hits of their days. All of the soloists were top-notchers in their line and applause was frequent. Mr. Scott, the female impersonator, was also a big feature of the evening. The entertainment closed with a rollicking farce.

50 years ago, 1960

According to a document filed yesterday at the Androscoggin County Registry of Deeds by Attorney Gaston M. Dumais, clerk of the corporation, the name of Sunset Beverages Inc., Auburn, has been changed by vote of the stockholders to Nehi Beverages Inc.

25 years ago, 1985

Chief Deputy Ronald B. Gagnon was appointed sheriff Friday by Gov. Joseph E. Brennan, ending a campaign that pitted two of the department’s highest-ranking officials against one another.

Brennan selected Gagnon over Capt. Quentin K. Strom, head of the department’s Public Safety Division, to replace Joseph P. Laliberte. Laliberte left office Friday afternoon after 11 years in law enforcement and just more than four years as sheriff.

Brennan’s last-minute appointment of Gagnon comes six weeks after Laliberte announced his impending resignation in late December.
