Chief Deputy Ronald B. Gagnon was appointed sheriff Friday by Gov. Joseph E. Brennan, ending a campaign that pitted two of the department’s highest-ranking officials against one another.

Brennan selected Gagnon over Capt. Quentin K. Strom, head of the department’s Public Safety Division, to replace Joseph P. Laliberte. Laliberte left office Friday afternoon after 11 years in law enforcement and just more than four years as sheriff.

Brennan’s last-minute appointment of Gagnon comes six weeks after Laliberte announced his impending resignation in late December.
