MEXICO — Town Manager John Madigan hopes he can create a municipal budget for fiscal year 2010-11 that is no more than the current year’s $2.46 million.

The town is facing a reduction in state revenue sharing that could be more than $110,000. Madigan said the exact number may not be known until April, or just before the state Legislature adjourns.

The current tax rate is $19.25 per $1,000 of valuation.

Residents approved borrowing up to $2 million last year to fix up roads and plan to use between $700,000 and $800,000 of it this year for Dalton Avenue, Mount Street and Mexico Avenue. Swett Avenue work is also expected to be completed.

Madigan said the amount that must be paid back for the road bond must be added to the proposed fiscal year 2010-11 budget.

“We’re going to try to keep the budget as low as we can,” he said. He said he doesn’t expect any reductions in the number of municipal workers.

Selectmen will hold a second budget session soon after the regular Feb. 24 board meeting to discuss matters to be considered when Madigan draws up the budget. Then, Madigan will present his budget to the board for review and possible adjustments.  After that, the Finance Committee will review that figure before the budget is presented to residents for a vote June 8.
