LEWISTON — Interested knitters of all ages and skill levels are invited to a free multi-generational knitting workshop, to be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, in the Couture Room at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St.
Participants will have a chance to learn the basics of knitting or to practice and expand on their needle skills while interacting in an informal, relaxed environment. Several “seasoned” knitters will be available for one-on-one instruction and technique tutoring.
The library knitting initiative was inspired by Lewiston resident Geri Gajewski who was looking to form a knitting group. Gajewski said that knitting with others provides an opportunity to socialize, to share project ideas and to set aside dedicated time to work on projects.
Last fall, Gajewski posted a flyer at the library seeking other interested knitters and was put in contact with Americorp/VISTA volunteer Molly Ladd, the library’s teen services coordinator who is also a knitter.
“I learned to knit from my grandmother, and saw this as having potential for generating an intergenerational activity at the library,” Ladd said. “It’s hard to find activities that appeal to adults and teens alike, but knitting is chic right now for all ages.”
The event is part of the Lewiston Public Library’s new objective to increase the scope and variety of programs that encourage teen and adult interaction.
Youth younger than 12 should be accompanied by an adult, who will also have the option of participating in the knitting if interested. Ladd plans to serve tea and fresh baked goodies at the event. If there is sufficient interest, an ongoing library knitting group will be formed, she said.
Interested participants are encouraged to sign up ahead of time by
