Lawrence E. Helms Sr.
1935 – 2010
LEWISTON — Lawrence E. Helms Sr. died suddenly Sunday, Feb. 14, at Montello Manor after a long illness. He was surrounded by his supportive and loving family.
He was born in Lewiston, April 18, 1935, a son of Nathan and Margaret (Croteau) Helms. He was devoted to his wife Beverly of 56 years. Together they raised eight children. She predeceased him on Dec. 23, 2009.
He was a talented carpenter with a natural ability to customize houses and any other project he chose. He was the driving force of his own construction business, and took great pride in his work passing on a solid work ethic to his children. He loved animals showing great patience in training them. He also enjoyed collecting coins and gave many coins to his grandchildren.
He is survived by his eight children, Brenda Carney of Augusta, Steven Helms of Poland, Kathy Melanson of Leeds, Lawrence E. “Dusty” Helms Jr. of Poland, Melanie Charest of Lewiston, Laurie Pinkham of Auburn, Beverly Hemond of Minot and Sharon Helms of Sabattus; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Murray and Natalie Veilleux.
He was predeceased by his wife; parents; a sister; and two brothers.
