SABATTUS — An elderly Lewiston man has died from injuries he suffered when he fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle on Saturday.
Aldee J. Frechette, 77, of Pleasant Street was driving his 1996 Jeep when it left the road, rolled over, went airborne and crashed. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Frechette fell asleep while driving at about 1 p.m. His Jeep crossed the highway and hit an embankment, which sent the vehicle “spinning in the air,” according to a Sabattus police officer. One witness said the vehicle went as high as 10 feet and as far as 20 feet before it landed upright.
Frechette was conscious and alert when he was cut from the SUV and taken to the hospital, police said. He told police he was on his way back from his grandson’s hockey game when he apparently dozed off.
Frechette was born in Bucksport and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked at Hahnel Bros. Co. and Bath Iron Works before retiring in 1997.
