DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Police Department hopes to have new radios in all the cruisers and four portables for the department’s four full-time officers within a few months.

Sgt. Jeff Howe said the department is pursuing a $7,461 grant from the Department of Homeland Security, in association with the Maine Emergency Management Agency.

The current cruiser radios are rapidly being outdated, and will soon be unable to contact radios in other towns because of a change by the Federal Communications Commission.

The grant, if successful, will buy three mobile radio units for the three cruisers, and four portable units for the four full-time officers.

Howe said the department hopes to apply for future grants that would pay for portable radios for each of the police reserve officers.
