PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — Maine and New Hampshire say their application for a $70 million stimulus grant to repair a bridge connecting the two states has been denied.
The grant would have been used to repair the Memorial Bridge, a lift-span bridge that connects Portsmouth, N.H., to Kittery, Maine. Its weight limit has dropped because of concerns over its deterioration.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation listed the Memorial Bridge as one of the country’s most endangered historic places in 2009.
The bridge and the Sarah Long Bridge, which also connects the two states, are part of a study identifying needed repairs and how to fund them.
