OXFORD – An Oxford man has been fined $7,000 after he clear-cut 40 acres of forest in Sebago in violation of the the state’s forest practices law.

Under the settlement, Lloyd Poland of Oxford agreed to pay a civil penalty and participate in training to prevent further violations.

Poland could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Paul Larrivee, regional enforcement coordinator of the Maine State Forest Service, said Wednesday that Poland did not have an adequate separation zone or a harvest plan prepared by a licensed forester before the harvest. Poland clear-cut 40 acres, which meant he should have retained 40 acres of separation zone, Larrivee said.

“You have to have separation. For every acre, you have to have two to have a clear-cut,” he explained.

He said Poland told him he did not intend to create any clear-cuts and took full responsibility for the violation.

“This was more of a mistake than anything. This is not considered a major case,” Larrivee said. “You can do clear-cuts you just have to meet certain criteria.”
