Joyce S. Salk

1928 – 2010

LEWISTON — Joyce S. Salk, 81, died early Saturday, Feb. 13, shortly after being admitted to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

The daughter of Frank and Laura Mae (Sanborn) Riley, she was born at home on Feb. 14, 1928 in Sabattus Village. She attended local schools and graduated from Sabattus High School in 1946. She would have celebrated her 82nd birthday this Valentine’s Day.

 After high school, she completed her course work at Bernard’s School of Hair and then went on to New York City to study further, obtaining her certification in cosmetology. Early in her career she worked as an operator for the local phone company and later spent several years at Raytheon. She was also, at one time, the proprietor of the Poodle Parlor in Sabattus.

She was a lifelong member of the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary and volunteered her services at Central Maine Medical Center.

Having always enjoyed travel, she resided in Texas, Florida, Connecticut and Massachusetts, prior to returning to the Lewiston/Auburn area.

  She will be forever remembered by family and friends for her love of parties and her laughter. We will always see that tilt of her head, her twinkling eyes and spectacular smile. She will be so very missed by all, especially her loving sister, Sylvia, her friend, her confidant and constant companion.

 She leaves her children, Jay Salk and wife, Cathy of Auburn; Rodney M. Vincent of Kettle Falls, Wash.; Roxanne Amaio of New Britain, Conn., Karen Burke of Wallingford, Conn.; her sister, Sylvia Tardif of Auburn; her brother, Frank Sanborn Riley and wife, Mary, of Lewiston; her grandchildren, Ryan Salk of Auburn, Troy and Chad Vincent of Aspen, Colo., Daniel Vincent of Spokane, Wash., Barbara Brush and Ruth Amaio of Southington, Conn., Taylor Fletcher of Methuen, Mass., Shaelyn Amaio of New York City, Chelsea Amaio of Old Orchard Beach, Stacey Gentile of Westbrook, Conn., Jessica Burke of New Haven, Conn. and Seth Burke of Jewett City, Conn; her great-grandchildren, Terran, Josh, Dominic, Ty, Brandon, Adam, Connor, Emma, Gavin, Colin, Avery and Lucas; five nieces and nephews; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews in the local area.

She was married to Leonard D. Salk,  who predeceased her in 1990 and maintained their home in Lewiston for the last 40 years.She was married to Leonard D.
